Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her grandmother and mother. When she was a young girl Ford experienced anxiety related to an obsessional-compulsive disorder. Ford became attracted to acting in her teenage years and enrolled in the National Youth Theatre. She got into the Sylvia Young Theatre School. After just a month, she decided that it wasn't suitable for her. Ford, instead of applying for admission to Central School of Speech and Drama and winning a placement on her third attempt made an application and secured acceptance to Central School of Speech and Drama. Shaun Dingwall - who later played Pete Tyler in Doctor Who - was one of her fellow students. Ford didn't complete her degree until 1993. But, by 1991, Ford had made her first appearance on TV on the show Surgical Spirit. At that moment, Ford adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Tate was on television in the Nineties in shows like The Bill and Men Behaving Badly. She worked on stage regularly as well as a part of The Royal Shakespeare Company's 2000-2001 season. Tate was recognized for her comedy stand-up that has been added to her resume in 1996.
